![]() Summary: By diverting freshwater down the former distributary of the Mississippi River, the selected project will deliver an additional 1000 cfs (cubic feet per second) of fresh water down Bayou Lafourche in order to help restore coastal wetlands. History: After initial reconnaissance level studies in the '90's, "Bayou Lafourche" first entered the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) process in 2001. Facing some challengers within that process, the project is now removed from CWPPRA, and remains 100% in the state's hands. The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources has taken the lead, and has achieved over 60% design and engineering of the selected alternative, Alternative 38, through downtown Donaldsonville and following the historic path of Bayou Lafourche. Current Status: Bayou Lafourche has become the most recent example of restoration challenges for coastal Louisiana, and making strides with Bayou Lafourche will set the tone for all current future restoration projects. Due to Hurricanes Ike and Gustav endangering drinking water, the Bayou Lafourche Freshwater District has initated the Emergency Capacity Dredging Project with Assistance from OCPR.
